My mother, girlfriend and I recently drove from Alton, Illinois up to Springfield to visit Lincoln’s Tomb and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. The museum was an amazing multi-media project devoted to Lincoln along with the times that surrounded his life. If you ever find yourself on the flatlands of Illinois, I highly recommend the museum.
To stand in silence when they should be protesting makes cowards out of men.” - Abraham Lincoln
On our way back from Springfield we stopped at the edge of the small town of Mt. Olive, Illinois where Mother Jones is buried in a Union Miners Cemetery.
I’m not a humanitarian, I’m a hell-raiser” – Mother Jones
Also buried in the cemetery is the famous Wobbly organizer General “Alexander” Bradley and at least two dozen miners that were killed during a strike in a neighboring town in 1898. Close to her grave our histories of her life and the different union organizers killed and buried throughout the cemetery.
